The purpose of this study is to find the relationship between characteristics of logistics technology and technology acquisition modes to understand the influences of logistics technology characteristics on the choice of technology acquisition modes. Based on the review of related literatures, technology acquisition models are classified into three types: (1) in-house R&D, (2) cooperative R&D, and (3) market transaction. Also, the characteristics of logistics technology can be classified as uncertainty, tacitness, complexity, and accumulation. The method of case study is used to find the relationship between logistics technology characteristics and technology acquisition modes for logistics industry in Taiwan. Four companies are selected for case studies. They are Uni-President Cold-Chain, Amigo Logistics, T. Join Transportation, and Hsinchu Transport. Based on the interview results from these four companies, we can find that the choice of technology acquisition modes for logistics companies is influenced by the uncertainty, complexity and accumulation characteristics of logistics technology.
