Those who have visited the science museums abroad must be much impressed with the ways they provide the sources for people to learn. Besides exhibition hall, the museum usually has an exploring section or the interactive learning center for kids to play. Inside the museums, various modern facilities or equipment such as audio-visual media, hands-on teaching aids, especially computers are definitely equipped. Those facilities connect resources of the museums to the communities and schools nearby. Children always feel free to get on the Webs of the museums seeking for the information they need. Just like birds in the sky, fish in the ocean, kinds enjoy learning in the science and technology world. When initiating this museum, we also considered forming such kind of learning center. However, subject to the overall space of the museum, we are unable to furnish more specific and thorough information. Only a small portion of the sources are provided in the library or audio-visual room located in the Exhibition buliding. Yet, with the opening of this museum, the first national socio-educational institute in Southern Taiwan, to establish a Technology Education Center came to our mind again. The Technology Education Center featured with the variety of segments, including technology laboratories, computer rooms, reference room, auditorium, etc. As playing an important role between the museum and the public, the Technology Education Center will promote the public's science and technology education, supplement the school's science and technology programs, and enhance the entire people's science and technology level. It becomes the key place for us to facilitate the science and technology education and the best option to further perceive the science and technology subjects specified. The Technology Education Center provides all visitors with perfect spots where you can learn through playing. The technology laboratories are designed for those who are not content with the participation in the show, no matter what topic is, such as communication technology, transportation, construction, biotechnology, or environmental protection, and so on. They will have a lot of fun with DIY activities performed in those labs where are similar to the existing situations of industries. Those who went through the exhibitions of ”Computers & Communications”, ”Computerized World” could be further entertained by visiting the DIY computer lab, multimedia lab, web lab, etc. For those looking over the shows of ”Aeronautics & Aerospace”, ”Dwellings and Environment”, etc., the Exploring Room of Information, science and technology is waiting for them to experience space adventures, interior decorations, etc., in the virtual reality. For children with parents, the ”family rooms” and the ”exploring room” are the best playgrounds to observe, perceive and study together on different aspects. In the end, hopefully, they will learn the fundamental scientific and technological concepts. For people who are willing to self- study, the reference room of Technology Education Center is certainly a good start, where plenty of scientific and technological resources can be looked into at any time. For school teachers and students, the reference room furnishes all information regarding deferent museums or educational theories. The Technology Education Center will keep strengthening its facilities for all the purposes above mentioned, and devote to R&D in study materials, teaching aids and media for school use. It is still a long way to go for the Technology Education Center. With the advantages of sufficient open space provided by the museum and man-power supported from the Division of Technology Education, a national technology educational center shall be right there just with a little amount of investment to hardware equipment. The expected achievements to be performed by the Technology Education Center will be: (C.H. Wong, 1996) 1. To set up the WWW system for inquiry about by the nationwide authorities concerned; 2. To prepare science and technology education learning activities, teachers' guidance, reference books, periodicals, learning materials, teaching aids, videos, films, etc., for school use; 3. To upgrade the relevant facilities for each room in Technology Education Center as a fully supplementary place for school's science and technology education; 4. To reinforce the capacity and resources of Technology Education Center for the public science and technology activities; 5. To execute the programs related to science and technology for the public self-study; and 6. To balance the educational resources between northern and southern regions in Taiwan. The Technology Education Center is open to the public. Our next target will fall on the establishment of a nationwide science and technology educational center. By means of more financial supports, our dream will come true in stages, Technology Education Center facilities will be expanded, and manpower will be enriched. We sincerely hope all the center-lovers may continuously share the first-class sources furnished by the Center either in person or through the Web system. And, let every one realize learning is wonderful, learning is fun.
