Starting from the 1960s, museums began the application of information technology. At that time, computers were used mainly between a single museum and mainframe computers such as SELGEM and GRIPHOS system. Later on, the cooperative organization, MCN, was founded. Till the 1970s, museums began hosting a great variety of conferences and presenting plans for collection. MDA was also established for promoting standardization of museum information. Meanwhile, many museums started working on upgrading and establishing their collection management system such as Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University and Detroit Institute of Arts. After the 1980s, due to the advance of information technology and the cost cut, many museums were able to have the upper hand of information technology and started enacting standards. Entering the 1990s, along with the availability of internet technology and improvement of digital handling skills, museums showed us the different faces. The contribution made by the cooperative, CIMI, helped to set up standards and norms for information sharing among museums. In general, in the past decades, museums have achieved many concrete results in the field of information management work. In terms of technology, main work has been done on hardware technology, installation of infrastructure, image handling technology and standard, communication technology, and multimedia system. Management function of such as finance and ticketing has been sound and WWW interface becomes very popular; however, some problems still need to work on such as the slow speed to update information, unclear target and direction, inconsistent standards, being lack of cooperation, technological professionals, malfunction of image technology and multimedia technology, and narrow mind. In the future, the development of information systems at museums will head for the direction of integration. Collection will be digitalized to compile to database. Then through the combination of study, exhibition, education, and expertise, museums will become a part of Internet environment and a public information enterprise.
