本文蒐集《良友》畫報有關今東南亞地理想像的圖像和文學文本,嘗試解析太平洋戰爭結束前,東亞與東南亞在大眾文化層面上的互動現象。《良友》這一民國時期平面媒體,絕非封閉式地建構上海和中國內陸的現代性,它另有「南向」的跨界歷史,值得我們重新梳理。再者,我們須將《良友》再現(represent)「南洋」的問題,放置在1920年代末至1940年代上海「南洋風起」的時代背景,加以檢視。此一時段,上海出版暨南大學學術刊物《南洋研究》和《南洋情報》,以及左翼文人的南遊(行)之書。我們可進一步思考:上海作為左聯基地、出版業盛地和租借地的多重空間,如何和為何要凝視華夷交雜的殖民地「南洋」?
This paper gathers the images and literary texts regarding the geographical imaginations of Southeast Asia in The Young Companion (1926~1945) in an attempt to analyze the interaction between East Asia and Southeast Asia on the level of popular culture prior to the end of the Pacific War. As a print medium in the Republican period, The Young Companion has not only constructed the modernity of Shanghai and China's inland, but also portrayed a "southbound" cross-boundary history, which is worth revisiting. From the late 1920s to the 1940s, Shanghai also published the Nanyang Yanjiu and Nanyang Qingbao, two academic publications by Jinan University, as well as books by left-wing writers on their travels to Nanyang. In this light, we may further ponder on the following question. At the point in time, Shanghai served as a base for the League of Left-wing Writers, a place with flourishing publishing industry, and a concession territory. As a city of multiple spaces, how and why did Shanghai have to establish a line of mutual gaze with "Nanyang" ?
