生物資訊學在後基因體世代的發展策略

Bioinformatics Development Strategy for the Post-genomic Era

摘要


人類基因體計畫使生物學增加了一種由發現驅動的研究模式。這種新模式改變了生物學者收集數據的方法,讓生物學者有機會從過去的研究局部現象,邁向從整體看問題的新時代,而生物資訊學則成為催化生醫技術發展的重要領域。這個轉型的過程是危機也是轉機,透過思考、分析未來的需求,將可預測趨勢,作為制定策略與發展途徑的依據。目前在研發方面,應吸引適當的跨領域人才加入,將資訊技術應用於生物學的觀察、提出假說、測試假說,並加強本土人才的培訓。產業方面應開放生物資訊核心實驗室給生醫技術產業使用,以加速其研發,並發展出更適合生物學者使用的下一代工具。在另一方面也要與其它核心實驗室合作,收集生物學者所需的生物資訊,待時機成熟即可形成具有競爭力的生物資訊產業。

Genome project is a discovery driven research, which has changed the way biologists collect their data and the way they look at a problem. Biologists may now study a problem from a global point of view rather than focusing on a few genes. Bioinformatics helps biologists to extract information from a huge amount of data; thus, this emerging new field becomes a catalyst for biomedical research. By analyzing the future needs, we should be able to predict the future trend and then determine the strategy and road map for future development. In the research and development aspect, it is important to recruit interdisciplinary scientists. Hopefully, they may apply their expertise to facilitate the observation, proposing hypothesis, testing hypothesis steps in biomedical research. Moreover, the training for young scientists should focus on the ability to tackle interdisciplinary problems. In the industry aspect, core laboratory has the mission of transforming research results into services. These services should open not only to academic laboratories, but also to the industry. The core laboratory will thus learn what do biologists need exactly. As a result, the core laboratory may develop the next generation bioinformatics tools that have market values. On the other hand, bioinformatics analysis will reveal what kind of information should be collected in the future. If other types of core laboratories are willing to collect this kind of information experimentally. The core laboratories will have competitive bio-information. A bioinformatics industry may naturally form at the right timing.
