Comparison of Cardiac Coronary Computed Tomography (CT) Dose with Spectrum CT and Conventional CT Scanner: Influences of Body Mass Index, Age and Gender

Cardiac coronary computed tomography (CT) scan is an important and non-invasive method to assess cardiovascular diseases. Recently, the novel spectrum CT scanner have replaced the conventional multi-slice CT scanner, because the novel spectrum CT scanner could provide lower radiation dose and better image resolution. A previous study demonstrated that, using the conventional multi-slice CT scanner, the different BMI and different gender significantly affect the cardiac coronary CT dose; however, the different age also could change the dose, which didn't reach statistical significances. The aims of this study are to estimate the influences of BMI, age, and gender on radiation dose in these two scanners. Our results showed that, compared with the conventional multi-slice CT scanner, the novel spectrum CT scanner in a group with BMI greater than 24 kg/m^2 had significantly lower dose (i.e., in 41% dose reduction). The similar results also found in different age and gender groups. Additionally, the four-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to estimate the main and interaction influences on scanner, BMI, age, and gender. The results showed that the different scanner and the interaction between scanner and BMI could significantly influence cardiac coronary CT dose; whereas the other main and interaction didn't affect the dose.
