Evaluating Environmental Radiation Background among Nuclear Medicine Department

This study demonstrates a possible increase in environmental radiation background at the Nuclear Medicine Department (NMD) in Lin Shin Hospital, resulting from the new operated positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) founded in 2010. Therefore, the environmental radiation dose rates may be higher than before. Environmental radiation backgrounds were evaluated by the accurate and sensitive thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD-100H) among NMD during six month surveys. Measured results indicated that patient waiting rooms, injection rooms and PET/CT operation room, and staff working area had significantly different radiation dose rates. These averaged environmental radiation dose rates ranged from 0.13±0.02 to 4.12±0.62 mSv/mo among NMD. NMD areas were divided into four parts and t-test demonstrated environmental radiation doses were significantly different among these parts. Environmental radiation dose rates of Taichung City ranged from 0.13±0.03 to 0.16±0.03 mSv/mo. These preliminary data showed that the radiation doses of staffs are within the acceptable limits and far lower than ICRP 60 recommended.
