素木得一與臺灣昆蟲學的奠基

日治時期，日本為開發臺灣經濟利源，貫徹其工業日本、農業臺灣的政策，對臺灣農業之重視實不言可喻。而學術則以配合現地產業發展為主，扮演協力者的角色，昆蟲學研究亦不例外。在素木得一的領導下，昆蟲學界對臺灣昆蟲學所展開之科學的、開創性的研究，不但符合殖民地產業發展的方針，且促進相關學術研究的發展，其所留下的眾多調查研究報告，至今仍為學界延用，為戰後臺灣的昆蟲學研究奠定深厚的基礎。同時，素木在害蟲行政、社團活動方面亦有頗多建樹。從兼任總督府殖產局職務、害蟲驅除預防規則的制定、植物檢查所的設置，到總督府博物館的設立、臺灣博物學會的創設、史蹟名勝天然記念物的保存、臺灣昆蟲學會的創設等，素木皆扮演著關鍵性的角色，活躍於一時。換言之，日治時期臺灣昆蟲學研究係以素木為核心而展開，不僅開啟近代臺灣科學的昆蟲學研究的大門，也建立素木在昆蟲學研究上先驅者、開拓者的地位。其研究團隊在臺灣農業發展、害蟲防治等方面，亦皆有相當卓越的成就，在在均是近代臺灣熱帶農學研究發展中不可或缺的一部分。

During the Japanese period, the colonial government did their best in carrying out its policy in developing agriculture and economics in Taiwan. Entomology was one of the many things that went hand in hand with the policy, and the leading character in this field was Shiraki Tokuichi. His scientific and creative study on the insects of Taiwan not only complied with the general direction of the policy but also incited many related studies. It has laid a solid foundation for the study of insects in Taiwan ever since. As a civil worker at the Department of Planting of the Office of the Governor-general, Shiraki Tokuichi was very contributive in dealing with noxious insects. He set up regulations for terminating noxious insects; he also set up equipments for examining plants. He was also very contributive in the establishment of the Governor-general Museum, the formation of the Society of Natural Sciences and the Society of Entomology, and the preservation of historical sites and natural treasures. In a word, Shiraki Tokuichi was the pioneer in the development of entomology in Taiwan: he opened the gate to the study of insects and laid the foundation for it. His team had done an important job in helping the development of agriculture and in terminating noxious insects in Taiwan. His work played an important role in the study of agriculture in tropical Taiwan.
