Russia's invasion of Crimea and Eastern Ukraine region has created fear around the world. The world worries that Russia will continue its expansionism and duplicate the methods used in its 2008 invasion of South Ossetia. The Ukraine will be separated and Russian influence will return to the level of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) period. The post-cold war period of globalization will be replaced by a new cold war. The cross strait relations are similar to the pre-invasion relations between Ukraine and Russia. The similarities of these relationships suggest to us that the attitudes and actions of the American and European governments to the current situation are reference points to gauge American and European political, economic, and military strategies in a future cross strait crisis. Interested departments in Taiwan should stay abreast of the current conflicts and plan accordingly.
