An Analysis of Bacterial Contamination in Cosmetic Products

Cosmetics are contaminated with strong possibility because of high humidity in Taiwan. The climate favors to the bacterial growth in the cosmetic products. If the cosmetic products were contaminated, it would seriously affect the health of consumers. In this study, thirty-four cosmetic samples including three eye-area products, two masks, fourteen cleaning cosmetics, twelve cream/lotion products and three hair treatment products were collected and bacteria numbers in the cosmetic products were also analyzed from 2014 to 2015. Results showed that viable bacteria counts in three cosmetic products were higher than the announced regulation limit: one was mask and others were shampoo/conditioner products. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was also found in the shampoo/conditioner products. As for the other cosmetic products, Escherichia coli, P. aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus were not detected. A failure rate of 8.82% indicates the bacteria concentrations in almost cosmetic products are lower than announced regulation limit in Taiwan.
