摘要

Many postpartum mother refuse to breast-feed because of the concern that breast-feeding may influence breast size although little study has been made to support this concern. This survey consisted of 836 women undergoing routine breast examination in Cathay General Hospital in the period between 1999 and 2001. The breast-feeding potential association factors were analyzed which including: body weight, age, body mass index (BMI), duration of breast-feeding. feeding method, age at first birth, number of live births, method for enhanced or suppressed lactation, and the bra cup size before and after delivery. The post-delivery BMI of the whole group was 21.4±2.4 kg/m^2, a statistically significant increase as compared with those of pre-delivery (19.8±1.8 kg/m^2). There was no significant difference on BMI figures in either pre-delivery or post-delivery between breast-feeding and control groups. The percentage of women whose breast size enlarged after delivery was 46.6% in breast-feeding group, statistically insignificant as compared with 48.9% in control group. By multiple logistic regression analysis, BMI, age, and the age at her first birth were significantly associated with breast size change after delivery. In contrast, there were no association between breast size change and any of the following factors, i.e., breast-feeding, the duration of breast-feeding, parity, method for enhanced or suppressed lactation. We conclude that breast-feeding has no effects on the change of breast size after delivery. And it is BMI alteration which associated with breast size changes.
