Online teaching materials as Teaching assistant? The Effect of a SPOC on English remedial courses

數位教材能否成為教師的助手?SPOC私播課用於英文補救教學之成效

摘要


In this study, a series of online teaching materials (videos) for basic English grammar proficiency was first developed and the materials were then used to further examine whether they played a role in affecting students' learning outcomes in remedial courses. The online teaching materials were incorporated as a Small Private Online Course (SPOC) in the remedial course "English Proficiency Test and Evaluation", in which most students were those who could not fulfill the graduation requirement of English proficiency. Two intensive 5- to 7-week classes of the course were adopted for this study. A quasi-experimental design was conducted to explore the effects of the online materials on students' learning outcomes, with one SPOC-incorporated class as the treatment group while one class with original settings as the control group. 27 students participated in the control group while 39 students took part in the treatment group. The pre-test, and post-test scores of the two groups were collected and analyzed for differences. 10 students from the treatment group were interviewed to discuss their reviews on the videos and their perceptions of and attitudes towards the incorporation of those materials in the course. They were also encouraged to provide their suggestions to improve the incorporation of online materials with offline classes. The results showed that the effect of the online materials on students' achievement test scores was limited, which may be due to the restrictive nature of intensive classes. However, the students were mostly positive about the materials and had learned from different sections of the videos. They acknowledged the benefits of such materials incorporated into English classes, provided that the contents could be more entertaining and better embedded into the class. The result shed some light on how important it is to carefully design the incorporation of online materials into offline classes.

本研究旨在探討一套基礎英語文文法數位教材,對於提升補救教學學生學習成效之影響,因此將建置好的數位教材以SPOC私播課的方式融入國立臺北護理健康大學補救教學課程「英語測驗分析」,本研究於該學期選擇五至七周密集授課形式進行的兩班「英語測驗分析」,以準實驗法將SPOC加入原本課程模式的一個班級設定為實驗組(39人),維持原本課程模式的一個班級設定為對照組(27人),在課程進行時蒐集兩組學生在前測,以及後測之成績並進行差異分析,以了解此套基礎英語文數位教材對於補救教學學生學習成效是否有影響,再個別訪談10為實驗組學生以了解其對SPOC的看法,以及他們對SPOC融入課程的認知及態度。研究結果顯示基礎英語文文法數位教材對於學生英語文成績之提升相當有限,主要原因可能為密集授課所限,但由訪談結果得知學生對於線上影片多表支持,也提出線上影片對該課程的學習有不同的幫助,若能將影片更加緊密結合課程內容,並提高其娛樂性,對於英語文文法數位教材融入英文補救教學課程中將會有更大的助益。
