Aspects of "Cultural Literacy" Relevant to Idiomatic Translation

摘要

本研究旨在探討文化與語言、文化與翻譯、文化與成語及英譯成語之文化面向等相關議題。研究方法以文獻回顧及語料分析歸納為主。研究發現除上述文化與翻譯間之關係外，英譯中文成語之社會、道德、婚姻、生命、財富、家庭與宗教等文化觀時，分析歸納發現，「天命思想」(Heavenly mandate)、「功利色彩」(Utilitarianism)與「儒家思想」(Confucianism)影響華人文化尤甚。眾所周知翻譯的主體是語言，其蘊涵著豐富的文化現象，因此翻譯時所面臨的文化障礙(cultural barrier)是另一值得深入探討的領域。若採用歸化(domestication)或異化(foreignization)等策略分析或許是一可行的辦法，由於此議題需較多篇幅深入討論，因此未能在本研究中說明。

This paper has sought to explore the cultural perspectives on the relevant issues, such as the preliminary discussion on culture, translation, idiom, aspects of language & culture, cultural consideration to translation, relationship between idioms and culture, and cultural concepts in Chinese-to-English (C-to-E) idiomatic translation. The research method of this study comprises theoretical bases and inductive orientations. Given the findings of this paper, it proves three major beliefs, 'Heavenly mandate', 'Utilitarianism' and 'Confucianism', of Chinese culture are developed and inducted from C-to-E idiomatic translation. It is well known that language is the direct objective of translation and influenced largely by culture, so cultural diversity inevitably influences translation. That is just the main barrier in translating. Thus, the related issues of cultural barrier in translation are suggested to be further addressed. Domestication and foreignization are two possible translation strategies to confront the related issues of cultural barrier in other papers.
