The aims of this study were to investigate solutions for reducing excessive inflammable infectious medical waste and its handling fees in the operation room. The average weight of inflammable infectious medical waste for each surgery was 1100g, and the handling fee was NTD $58.3 (currently US$1.00 NT$35.5). We began to apply the following quality control tools: announcement of a new classification policy, establishment of standard working procedures, labeling of containers, and reinforcement of rewards and punishments. After these interventions, the inflammable infectious medical waste volume had declined to 757.5g per surgery, and the handling fee to NTD$40.1; the effects were maintained for over 10 months. Correct classification can significantly reduce the volume of inflammable infectious medical waste produced and can remarkably reduce the handling fees for hospitals.
