Using Quetiapine for the Treatment of Methamphetamine-induced Psychosis

Quetiapine

Objectives: Long-term and regular use of methamphetamine can induce psychosis. Growing evidence suggests that the second generation antipsychotic drug quetiapine may be useful as a treatment for substance and alcohol use disorder patients. Methods: We report the use of quetiapine to treat seven cases of methamphetamine-induced psychosis (MIP) in an acute inpatient setting. Results: The mean age of the patients was 30.4±8.0 years old and they had a mean duration of methamphetamine use of 8.6±3.5 years. The mean baseline score for the positive and negative syndrome scales was 68.9±20.3, and this was decreased to 42.6±12.6 after 4 weeks of treatment at a mean dose of quetiapine of 264.3±137.6 mg/day. The patients tolerated this medication well. Conclusion: Quetiapine shows efficacy and its use seems to be beneficial when managing MIP.
