Omega-3 Unsaturated Fatty Acids Do not Improve the Cognitive Function of Elderly with Mild Cogitative Impairment

The degeneration of cognitive functions in elderly has become an important issue in gerontology along with the aging society. Current recommendations for slowing down disease progressions in elderly with mild cognitive impairments (MCI) only suggest lifestyle modifications and control of related risk factors. Due to the lack of effective pharmacological treatments, many studies have started to explore the efficacy of nutritional supplements in the improvement of cognitive functions, and one of these common supplements is omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids. This report followed the clinical scenario of the evidence-based medicine contest in The 2016 Healthcare Quality Improvement Campaign organizing by Joint Commission of Taiwan, and demonstrated how clinical health care providers adopted evidence-based medicine (EBM) methods to search up-todate evidence to prove that supplements of omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids do not significantly improve the cognitive functions in aged patients with MCI. Moreover, we reviewed related literature and introduced the procedures and clinical implications of EBM in this report.
