Association between Body Mass Index and Breast Ultrasound Findings among Middle-aged Women

Purpose: The association between body mass index (BMI) and Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BIRADS) category 3 and 4 findings has not been fully explored. Methods: We used breast ultrasonography to diagnose BIRADS 3 and 4 findings. BMI was calculated as the weight divided by the square of the height (kg/m2). Multivariable logistic regression was employed to assess the association between BMI and BIRADS 3 and 4. Results: Higher BMI was significantly associated with lower risk of BIRADS 3 and 4 findings [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 0.51, 95% confidence interval (CI) =0.37-0.70]. The association between lower BMI and BIRADS 3 and 4 findings was observed mainly in women before the age of 50 (AOR = 0.50, 95% CI = 0.34-0.74). Conclusion: Lower BMI was associated with BIRADS 3 and 4 breast findings in Asian women, and age modifies this association.
