The purpose of this paper was to understand the first year experience of being a nurse among graduated junior nursing college students. A longitudinal, qualitative approach was used to investigate the experience. A purposive sample of 15 nursing staffs was recruited and took part in 3 times focus group interviews at their 1st, 2nd and 3rd working practicum. The data were transcribed and analyzed using descriptive content analysis. It was found that the first year experience of being a nurse has four themes including ”fear, anxiety and self-doubt”, ”multiple task challenges”, ”adjustment and coping” and ”feedback and reward.” The finding provided information for nursing educators, administrators and researchers to better understand the experience, and further offered a reference for developing future strategies of clinical nurses training, consultation and retention.
