This study, based on the "Chinese Competency and Cultivation" course I offer in the Center for General Education in National Taitung University, investigates college students' ability to undertake cultural exploration of local ethnic communities. This course is inspired by the "Regional Culture" course I took in graduate school, where the teacher asked the students to explore the idea of ethnic integration as explained in different theoretical books. It is this experience that encourages me, now a teacher as well, to integrate research into teaching. In tune with my own teaching experiences and the model of life cultivation adopted in my Chinese classes as well as with the themes of "local writing" and "ethnic integration," the study will guide the students in my course to visit Fenglin--a cultural center of Hakka--conduct a research on its culture, collect and reflect upon data, and then present their research results. It is expected that the students will thereby come to develop a deeper understanding of the Hakka spirit and culture as well as a new perception of Fenglin.
