Beating Covid-19 along with the Development of New Social Concepts-A Preliminary Investigation into the Transformations of Views of Labourers' Bodies During the Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a tremendous impact on human people's labour, life, and economy all over the world. The Taiwanese people, who raised the epidemic alert level for the whole country to Level 3 in response to community transmission in the middle of May, are not exceptional. Meanwhile, the elementary labourers are facing challenges like income-decreasing, labour safety, social security, as well as the blurring of the boundary between work and personal life. Moreover, the status, behaviours, feelings, as well as social meanings of labourers' bodies, are also undergoing deep transformations. For this pilot study, 6 local labourers from different career areas have been interviewed by telephone during the epidemic alert in June, to examine and discuss the following questions: 1. How does the social environment shape people's bodies and their behaviours? 2. Which kinds of subjective thoughts have been embodied by labourers' bodies? 3. Have the views of the body changed and shaped/created new social values? According to the preliminary analysis, the labourers' bodies are still utilized and reduced to a mere tool for subsistence as before during the epidemic. However, some of the new conceptions were also developed due to drastic changes in the labour and the living environment, although labourers' bodies represent class differentiation as usual. For example, the body is no longer "invisible" in the field of work; the alienation of physical and health needs and working conditions has attracted attention; and the usual blindness, domination/dominated, and public interests have finally regained attention. At the time of beating Covid-19, the personal experiences via body led to the rethinking of social issues. New conceptions and a corresponding opportunity for structural changes were also blooming consequently.
