Development of an Automatic Reliability Calculation System for AMI

The installation of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is looked upon as a bridge to the construction of smart grids. After AMI is deployed, many advanced functions should be developed and implemented to gain benefits from AMI. For example, improving the reliability calculation is one of the most important issues for AMI. An automatic and accurate reliability calculation system is therefore proposed in this paper to extend the applications of AMI. Since the conventional smart meters don’t have the capability of outage event recording, the reliability indices cannot be calculated automatically and accurately even after AMI deployments. A ZigBee-based smart meter with outage recording function is designed first in this paper and used to transmit the detailed power consumption data and outage event data to a rear-end processing system periodically. According to the detailed and accurate outage data stored in the rear-end database, an automatic and accurate reliability calculation system can be realized. The customer interruption costs can also be estimated by the proposed system. Experimental and simulation results show that the proposed system can improve the accuracy of reliability calculation and has great potential to be integrated into AMI.
