Allergic rhinitis is a common disease seen in the clinic, and treatment with Chinese medicine is quite effective. Within the classical literature of Chinese medicine have been numerous discussions on theories of the etiology of allergic rhinitis. Although symptoms of allergic rhinitis can vary, the etiologies are all similar. Allergic rhinitis due to lung qi vacuity weakness and lung-spleen qi vacuity is the most commonly seen, but kidney qi depletion vacuity is also a factor. Various methods and formulas used clinically to treat allergic rhinitis include; boost qi and secure the exterior using Yu Ping Feng San; strengthen the spleen to engender the clear using Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang; disperse cold, warm the lung and transform rheum using Xiao Qing Long Tang; harmonize lesser yang using Xiao Chai Hu Tang; warm the channels and resolve the exterior using Ma Huang Xi Xin Fu Zi Tang, and warmly harmonize the construction-defense using Gui Zhi Tang, all of which are quite effective.
