摘要
本文討論語言學在人類演化的研究上所扮演的角色。第一部份討論語言演化的兩個主要步驟，以及大腦和語言的共同演化關係。本文第二部分提出三種意涵的「和解」：[1]「走出非洲假說」和「多元地區連續性假說」之間，[2]不同學門之間對人類演化的考量，以及[3]垂直傳遞和水平傳遞效應之間的和解。第三部分進一步討論語言學如何從此三方面的考量獲益：[1]語言分組等於人類的分組，[2]史前語彙是史前資料的來源，以及[3]語言分化的斷年資料就是研究古代人類遷移的依據。本文最後討論在矩陣上的誤差往往就是水平傳遞的效應。
