Yu Huai-zhi, Yu Xi-huang and Xinhai Revolution in Shanghai

Yu Huai-zhi (1853-1918) began his career as a comprador in an English firm, and then became rich by running cotton industry. He was a participant in the 39 organizations at the late Qing Dynasty in China. The organizations included local autonomous advocates, industry associations and charity groups. The main points in this paper include: 1) conspirial discussions before the Revolution, 2) procedures of attacking Shanghai Circuit Intendant Office (上海道台衙門) and Jiangnan Machine Mill (江南機器製造局), 3) contribution of commercial guerrillas (商團) to social security, 4) participation and donation from local elites to Shanghai Military Government (滬軍都督府). After reviewing related newspapers, memoirs, and genealogies, the author found that Yu Xi-huang, son of Yu Huai-zhi and the Deputy President of commercial guerrilla that he established, joined the plot gathering on the night prior to Xinhai Revolution in Shanghai. According to the guerrilla members, the father and the son did participate in the attack of Jiangnan Machine Mill. The three commercial guerrillas maintained the social order in shift patrols before and after the Revolution, and their own shops were located within the protected area. Moreover, the father and the son once served as the Deputy Minister and the Fund Raiser of the financial sector in Shanghai Military Department, and had made donations to the government in urgent need of money.
