Developing a Sexual Health Self-Efficacy Scale for Postpartum Women (SHSES-P)

摘要

The purpose of this study was to establish a reliable and valid instrument to evaluate women's confidence in sexual health after childbirth. Three hundred and two participants from the postpartum ward of a medical center and a regional hospital in northern Taiwan were recruited through purposive sampling. An item scale of sexual health self-efficacy scales for postpartum women (SHSES-P) was developed through literature review, examination of related instruments, self-efficacy theory, and expert suggestions. A content validity index and item analysis were used to determine item eligibility. The three dimensions of SHSES-P for postpartum women are: sexual physical health self-efficacy, sexual psychological health self-efficacy, and sexual social health self-efficacy, which are divided into 10 subscales that together comprise a total of 72 items. The results showed that SHSES-P has a high internal consistency and acceptable stability. Under sexual physical health self-efficacy, the following four factors explained 70.53% of the total variance: sexual physical self care, promotion of sexual physical comfort, sexual physical recovery evaluation, and promotion of vaginal elasticity. Under sexual psychological health and self-efficacy, 68.86% of the total variance was explained by the two factors of sexual self-reconstruction, and confirmation of body image. Under sexual social health self-efficacy, the four factors of sexual life adjustment, sexual expression, contraceptive control, and lying-in coping strategy explained 71.66% of the total variance. The results revealed that SHSES-P has solid psychometric properties, and is a useful tool for postpartum health assessment, intervention and postpartum health care evaluation.
