Purpose: This study explored the changes in training, psychological status, interpersonal relationship, and perceived stress of women's semi-professional basketball rookies, and their career planning. Method: Six rookies from the Women's Super Basketball League (mean age = 18, mean competition year = 6.5), who just graduated from senior high school, participated in this study. A semi-structured interview was used to investigate their experiences in transiting from a high school level competition to a professional level. Data were further analyzed by the content analysis. Results: This study indicated that training intensity, teamwork requirement, pressure perception, and the closeness of teammates and coaches increased while the rookies transited into a professional level. Social supports from senior teammates and families were the most important resources of coping stress. Regarding career planning, extending professional basketball life was the priority of the rookies. Conclusion: At the early stage of career transition, social support is the most important coping resource for athletes to deal with training maladaptation and low competence perception. It is also noticeable that career choices for elite athletes are mostly focused on sport-related realms, implying limited career development resulting from early professional. Future practitioners should pay more attention to this issue.
