Research on the relationship between stress, physical and mental health, professional commitment and willingness to stay of anesthesia nurses

Anesthetic nurses play an important role in caregiving in the frontline for patients who receive operations. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationships between anesthesia nurses' stress, physical and mental health and professional commitment, to examine whether these factors affect the anesthetic nurses' willingness to stay. The Professional Commitment questionnaire, the Nurse Stress Checklist andthe Chinese Health Questionnaire(CHQ)were used in the study. The questionnaire survey was conducted with 510 full-time anesthetic nursesin Taiwan, and the data was analyzed with Pearson correlation and structural equation modeling. The results indicated that stress has a significantly negative impact on professional commitment and physical and mental health and that anesthetic nurses who reported higher stress have lower levels of professional commitment and better physical and mental health. However, professional commitment and physical and mental health have significantly positive impacts on the anesthetic nurses' willingness to stay. The results of the study can be shed insights for healthcare managers who want to increase the willingness for them to stay at their workplaces. This research is a study focusing on anesthesia nurses in Taiwan. Facing the change of nursing regulations, this research can shed insights into medical management.
