The purpose of this paper attempts to provide a historical study that places Johannes Brahms' violin sonatas in stylistic perspective, including three sonatas for piano and violin and the Scherzo movement from ”F. A. E.” Sonata. The studies of historical background and brief analysis of each sonata are included. Furthermore, a thematic analysis of the final movement-Allegro molto moderato-of Brahms' Violin Sonata No. lin G Major, Op. 78, the notable ”Regenlied Sonata”, is provided. The analysis focuses on the formal division, thematic and motive relationships, and disposition and relationship of key centers. The discussion illustrates Brahms' unique compositional style that can be described as a synthesis of Romantic expression and Classical tradition.
