There are many factors that affect sport team performance. Role perception is one of the constructs that are related to individual performance or team process and performance. That is, the more clearly team member understand their own role responsibilities, the better individual or team results there will be. The purpose of this study was to develop a Chinese version of the Role Ambiguity Scale (Beauchamp, Bray, Eys, & Carron, 2002), examine the structure of the scale, and evaluate the items. Back-translation was conducted, and two forms of the Role Ambiguity Scale were developed into Chinese. 180 athletes competing in team sports participated in the study. Confirmatory factor analyses and item analysis were conducted, and the results provided preliminary evidences for the item discrimination and internal consistency of the Chinese version scale. The CFA results provided support for a two-factor structure of the scale that included role clarity and the negative sentence items of role perception. Factor 1, role clarity, included all 16 affirmative sentence items, while factor 2 included all 4 negative sentence items. However, the factor structure of the Chinese version of the Role Ambiguity Scale was not the same as the original scale, which might be due to the method effect. Further studies are needed to develop the appropriate measure for Taiwanese athletes' role ambiguity perception.
