Ectopic Eruption of the Maxillary First Permanent Molars: A Case Report

Ectopic eruption of permanent first molars is defined as a disturbance of eruption with a mesial eruptive path which result in the permanent tooth impacted under the distal undercut of the second primary molars. Untreated irreversible ectopic eruption of first permanent molars may cause delay eruption or impaction of permanent first molars, excessive root resorption or premature loss of primary second molars, and space deficiency of second premolars. This case report describes the treatment of a 6-year-old boy with ectopic eruption of bilateral maxillary permanent first molars. After one months of bilateral permanent first molars distalization by Halterman appliances, the ectopic erupting first molars had been corrected and the resorpted primary second molars still retained and without symptom nor mobility.
