The case study described a nursing care experience of a colostomy female patient with body image disturbance. From February 18(superscript th) to 28(superscript th), 2009, we used Gordon's 11-item Functional Health Pattern as assessment tool, through observations, physical examination and interviews to collect the patient's physical, psychological, social and spiritual data. The primary health problems included acute pain, anxiety, body image disturbance and risk for infection. We used graphic photograph and approximate real mold as teaching materials for instructing the patient and her husband effectively cleaning colon reservoir step by step. Besides, we provided alternative methods and listening skill for decreasing patient anxiety and releasing her acute pain. Furthermore, we provided disease-related self-care information and referred successful case sharing experience in order to enable the patient both conquered her fear and impact of body image disturbance and re-established self-confidence for returning normal life.
