Transgressive Eroticism in Bataille's Novels

Reading Georges Bataille's erotic novels is utterly different from reading mainstream erotic literature which targets readers' sense of excitement. Bataille's novels are not abundant in erotic scenes which are intended to cause arousal in readers. Much to his readers' astonishment, his novels are teeming with shocking and confusing forces, such as violence, killing, incest, and death. These forces terrify the reader on a basic level and are thus marked as taboo. It can be argued that Bataille's erotic novels were penned in order to deal with such prohibitions. It comes as no surprise that his novels are bound to disinterest or provoke readers who adhere to culture norms. Apart from the aforementioned repulsive forces, the paradoxical coexistence of opposition makes readers even more puzzled. This article investigates the essence of Bataille's eroticism. Firstly, the article delves into the following research questions: Why does Bataille employ the female form rather than the male form to explicate the human eroticism? Secondly, how does the concept of inner experience, Bataille puts forward, serve to distinguish humans' eroticism from animal sexuality? In the third part, the principle of loss in Batialle's erotic novels is examined. Above all, this article shows that the eroticism Bataille draws on is a force which may undermine our constructed social being, which is a form of rebirth.
