The global economic landscape has changed significantly in recent decades. Companies have adapted gradually to these new economic realities, and must keep pace continually with the rapid development of global business. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a vital role in the world economy and contribute substantially to output, employment, and income. However, SMEs have been faced with a myriad of challenges in attaining their objectives. SMEs have to develop new global strategies for the changing geography of international business. In response, they should restructure their organization or re-formulate their business strategies in order to maintain profitability. According to the theoretical basis connection of internationalization theory and resource-based theory, this study explored whether SME executives adopting a global mindset impact a strategic alliance formation and optimal international performance. In particular, the paradigm developed by previous literatures and theories was utilized to determine whether alliances and international performance from manufacturing industries in Taiwanese SMEs could be affected by the global mindset of top managers. Survey data from 365 Taiwanese SMEs were used in data analysis. The empirical study results of hypothesis testing revealed that a global mindset significantly impacted an alliance formation in this study. However, a global mindset was not found to significantly impact international performance. Overall, SME alliances were important drivers in increasing international performance. The outcomes of this study may contribute to the business practices of top managers and governmental agencies by highlighting the imperative roles and effects of strategic alliances in international operation activities.
