Our patient a 37 year old woman first began having episodes of epilepsy when she was 25 years old. She was diagnosed as having primary generalized epilepsy and after taking westerns medicines for 3 to 4 years decided on her own to stop treatment. Three years later, after experiencing a recurrence of symptoms, she began taking medicine again but it was ineffective. During episodes her symptoms included; delirium, dilated pupils, and clenching of the teeth and hands. Symptoms lasted for about one minute. After two minutes she would regain consciousness. The patient is currently taking western medicine, but the rate at which the episodes occur has been increasing, so she decided to seek help from acupuncture. The primary points used for treatment were the Five Forehead points and Si Shen Cong, chosen for their calming effects on the heart and spirit. These points were combined with points on the body and ears and the primary needling technique was even supplementation and drainage. Treatment was given 2-3 times per week. The patient noticed that there was a correlation between the occurrence of an episode and her symptoms of dizziness, headaches, sleep problems and the time just before and after her menstrual period. Treatment resulted in fewer episodes during the past two months and the patient reported that there has been an improvement in her headaches and dizziness since receiving acupuncture.
