This case study involves a patient who, after receiving chemotherapy for breast cancer, began bleeding from her vagina. After undergoing surgery, tests revealed that the bleeding was due to metastasized cancer cells. In addition, the patient received several blood transfusions after several blood analyses indicated she suffered from low blood platelet and hemoglobin counts. Our Chinese medicine treatment protocol for supplementing the blood followed the principle of fortifying the spleen and boosting qi. According to the idea that a material substance such as blood cannot be rapidly produced, it is advisable in certain situations to urgently supplement that without form; qi, which is also the commander of blood. Hence, heavy doses of Ginseng were used and the patient's condition improved.
