"Taiwan New People Newspaper" Turned Right: Lai Qing and the Modernized Literary Column at the Beginning of its Daily Publication

After its publication as a daily newspaper in April, 1932, the new social and historical reality that Taiwan New People Newspaper faced at that time propelled it to seek the status as ”the only institute for Taiwanese opinions” in Taiwan. This paper focuses on how the mild political criticism from the Left on ”Taiwan Local Autonomy Association” was adopted as a force to fight against the Taiwan New People Newspaper and its literary column. By taking Lai Qing, a writer who desired to be the ”Kikuchi Kan in Taiwan,” as a case in point, this study aims to explore the transformation of the Japanese literary column caused by the conflict between the two forces in the nationalist movement at that time-namely, the Left which lost their mobility under the repression of Fascism and the Right which retreated into the local autonomy movement. The case of Lai Qing's sudden rise and decline shows that the Left's public opinions were different from those that came from the external challenges, such as the inspection from the Governor-General Office and the newly developed video industry. Instead of confronting these opinions outright, they threatened the operator and the writers of Taiwan New People Newspaper from the inside of the nation. By ”bringing Lai Qing back to live,” this paper seeks to foreground how the literary journals and the literary column in the newspaper in the 1930s parted their ways and look into the period when the Taiwan New People Newspaper took its right turn. In addition, the paper also tries to discuss the following issues: First, caught between the pressure from the officials and the criticism from the Left, how did the literary column in this newspaper open up a space for popular literature? Second, after the decline of the political movement, how did the ideological conflicts retreat into the literary circle and take it as its battlefield? Third, how did the popular writers' dissatisfaction with the literary column in the Taiwan New People Newspaper induce the cooperation and division in the literary field?
