A Preliminary Study on the Medication Safety Cognition among the Elderly in Community: A Case Study of a Community Care Center in Central Taiwan

People suffered with chronic disease need take medication to control their health situation. In Taiwan, 75% elderly people are victims of at least one chronic disease, and more than 50% of them are suffered with two or more chronic diseases. On the consequence, more than 50% of elderly people are taking more than two types of medication to maintain their daily health condition. Thus, medication safety is very important issue to them. A structured questionnaire cross-sectional study design was conducted; and one to one interviews technique was applied to collect information needed to evaluate the medication safety cognition among the elderly dwelling in community. The results displayed that 53.2% of the study subjects had below average score in the five core competencies of medication use, the age and education of subjects were influence factors. This finding suggests that in health promotion activities in community care center, the medication safety education program should provide to empower the medication safety cognition of the elderly.
