Besides Bible, one of the essential elements in Christian ceremony is Hymnbooks. Editing the hymnbook in Taiwan is based on dozens spread versions of Ióng Sim SÎn Si in China ever since 1814. In addition, Ióng Sim SÎn Si is considered influencing the most on hymnbooks in the Christian church in Taiwan at the beginning of re-spread Christianity to Taiwan in late 19th century. Nowadays, many Chinese books collected in the second half of 19th century by Alexander Wylie (sinologist, 1815-1887) while staying in China, are carefully kept in Bodleian Library, Oxford University, UK. Some of these books have been shown in Centennial Exhibition (Philadelphia, USA, 1876) before brought by the library, including the editions of hymnbooks in various dialects, among them different editions of Ióng Sim Sîn Si were also exhibited. The purpose of this paper is aiming on discussing three Chinese publications on Western Musical Theory by scotch missioner Carstairs Douglas (1830-1877), who visited Taiwan several times. The three publications mentioned are Ióng Sim Si Tiâu (1868), Gàk Lí Phó Chè (1870) and Se Kok Gák Hoat (after 1870). Hopefully, we can preview some profiles of Chinese musical archives on the Western to the Orient in late 19th century through this research.
