A PARTIAL LEAST SQUARE-STRUCTURE EQUATION MODEL FOR OLDER ADULTS' USE INTENSITY AND SELF-DISCLOSURE ON SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES: EXPLORING THE RELATIONSHIPS TO ONLINE SOCIAL SUPPORT AND SELF-ESTEEM

The PLS-SEM model was used to analyze the use intensity and self-disclosure of SNSs both gain online social support and establish a positive self-esteem. The subjects consisted of 229 older adults aged 45-79 with experience of SNSs. Research shows that older adults can establish network relationships through SNSs use and self-disclosure behaviors. The higher online social support that older adults possess directly raises their self-esteem. Use intensity significantly affects the depth, honesty and intention of self-disclosure. Disclosure intention is the most important reference for older users. The stronger the intention of older adults to provide information, the higher online social support and self-esteem in SNSs. Disclosure depth and honesty are not significantly related to online social support but directly affects self-esteem. Disclosure honesty and self-esteem showed a positive relationship, revealing that depth and self-esteem have a reverse relationship. This means that when older adults disclose the message more intimately in SNSs, their self-esteem is lower. In addition, when the disclosure message is more accurate, their self-esteem is higher. The results show that the higher the intensity of the social network in the older adults, the greater the amount of real information exchange, thus gaining more network interpersonal support. If older adults learn and use a social network, they can also gain online personal development, and then establish a positive self-perception and healthy social psychology. Therefore, the learning and participation of the online community has a positive value and significance for retired older adults.
