Suitable Medium Formulas for Vegetable Cultivation in Urban Farm

This study intends to select a suitable and economical media formula for growing vegetables in seedling and growth stages. Peat moss (PM), different particle sizes of vermiculite(V#2&V#3) and perlite (P#2&P#3) were combined into ratios of 1: 1: 1and 3: 1: 1 respectively to create four media formulas. Water convolvulus (Ipomoea aquatica Forsk.), edible amaranth (Amaranthus mangostanus L.) and leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) were cultured in those media and examined for growth. The results showed that edible amaranth during the seedling period and water convolvulus during the growth period had better growth performance in the media formula PM:V # 2:P # 2 = 3: 1: 1 and PM:V # 3:P # 3 = 3: 1: 1. EC value and container water-holding capacity were higher with the 3:1:1 media ratio than with the 1:1:1 media ratio. Therefore, media ratio of 3:1:1 may be more suitable for fast-growing and high water-demand leafy vegetables. Accordingly, the media ratio of 3: 1: 1 resulted in better growth performance than that of the media ratio 1: 1: 1 in most conditions. Since media ratio 3:1:1 also had lower cost, it is more suitable in urban farm.
