Profiles of B&B in a Tribal Tourism Attraction: An Example of Wutai Township, Taiwan

Indigenous cultures have become an increasingly important tourism attraction. Tourists are attracted by diversified indigenous cultural products. In Wutai Township, Pingtung County, Bed and Breakfast establishments incorporate elements of Rukai tribal culture and satisfy tourists' needs by providing novel experiences. This paper documents the characteristics of B&Bs from both supply and demand perspectives. It is shown that tourists visit Wutai Township mainly because of the desire to experience the indigenous culture. When they select a B&B, 'being able to attend local festivals or events' and 'quietness' are among the most important motivational factors underpinning their choices. In addition, tourists wish to have private showers and toilets and rooms with scenic views. All of the three major B&B operators are Rukai and they provide complimentary local guides and cultural interpretations.
