After reviewing some recent developments in cultural studies and Christian theology respectively and exploring the theology of Paul Tillich (1886–1965), especially its relationship with the Frankfurt school, existentialism, and psychoanalysis, this paper will attempt to demonstrate that Tillich's theology may offer a theological perspective for the theological appropriation of cultural studies as an academic discipline. Based on this perspective, there can be mutually beneficial interaction between Christian theology and cultural studies. Furthermore, this Tillichian perspective will be particularly relevant to theological development in contemporary China.
