This paper discussed the nursing issues arised from caring for a patient with end-stage ovarian cancer secondary with severe pleural effusion and explained her disease progression resulting in her physical discomfort and feeling of hopelessness. During the period of nursing care from 15th~29th June, 2012, the nursing care was based on Gordon's 11 functional health patterns using methods of observations, interviews and physical assessment to collect information, establish at least three nursing problems and diagnoses including ineffective breathing, acute pain experience, and feeling of hopelessness. Throughout the nursing process with a sincere attitude and empathy with the patient and their family, the therapeutic relationship was established between the patients and the nursing staff, and a comprehensive and continuous evaluation and care for individual cases was able to be provided. This also helped patients relieve pain and improve quality of life, be positive in facing the problems arising from the disease and willing to continue the treatment. I hope that this nursing care experience has shared clinical practice that provides a reference for other clinical nurses in future.
