This paper copes with the issue of aerodynamics of medium Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT). Using Fluent, a well-developed CFD software, a more complete database of the blade airfoil coefficients is calculated and the accuracy of YawDyn in computing the aerodynamic loading is examined. YawDyn is currently widely applied for expediting HAWT loading calculations. By comparing the results of blade loading derived from these two different methods, this study discovers YawDyn which holds the excellent calculation efficiency is very sensitive to wind conditions. Moreover, it's preprocessing tool, AeroDyn which employs the drag and lift coefficients of airfoils, if not carefully tuned, can also cause significant errors of loading calculations. Through modifying the database of the blade airfoil coefficients used in YawDyn and verifying with the simulation of the turbine characteristics by using Fluent, this paper reveals and evaluates the reliability of the YawDyn.
