A Study on the Relationship of Maintenance Human Error and Safety Attitude in Taiwan

This paper is to evaluate the importance of 6 human factors: lack of communication, pressure, fatigue, norms, distraction, and lack of awareness in the most 12 human factors defined by Transport Canada for airline maintenance staff. A questionnaire was developed to illustrate the quantifiable evaluation of experts' input on the importance of human factors for the maintenance management and safety attitude by domestic aviation maintenance technicians. A total of 250 questionnaires were distributed across the five divisions in aircraft maintenance department: Aircraft Main System, Aircraft Equipment, Aircraft Avionics & Electrical, Aircraft Structure and Aircraft Cleaning & Painting, and 201 surveys were completed and returned (a response rate of 81%) by domestic aviation maintenance technicians. From the importance analyses of 6 human factors, there are obvious differences according to their group characteristic as their age, education level, working seniority and working department. The results are valuable for aircraft maintenance practitioners and official policy makers to improve their planning and decision making in aviation safety.
