以環境為核心價值的生命科學通識教學經驗

Improving Teaching of Environment-Centered Life Sciences in General Education

摘要


大學通識課程是學生素質養成的重要基石,然而許多學生僅重視專業的課程,視通識課程為營養學分,學習動機不強,在以人文社會專業為主的學生群中實施自然科學教學難度更高。本文報導在教學助理的支援下,加入課堂授課外的多項活動,落實以環境與生態為核心價值的《生命科學導論》教學。全班學生分成九個小組,圍繞著外雙溪釣蝦場,以實際調查與訪視探索不同的子題:1、外雙溪釣蝦場的外在環境與生態,2、釣蝦場釣物與外雙溪流域魚類的分析,3、各釣蝦場的釣物飼養水質環境與管理,4、釣客與大學生對外雙溪釣蝦場的認識,5、其他地區釣蝦場比較分析。教學活動尚有:課堂與線上討論、環境與生態知識競賽、線上學習心得、外雙溪參訪等。調查結果顯示學生們高度認同本科目,本課程的教學內容與方法有效地提升學生們對周遭環境生態的認識。

General education contributes to the intellectual foundation of college students, nevertheless, many students only focus on their major courses and lack motivation in taking these fundamental courses. Teaching natural sciences in general education is a big challenge on Soochow campus where the students mostly major arts, literatures, social sciences and languages. This article reports on the improvement of teaching environment-centered ”Introductory Life Sciences” with some group activities. By observations, interviews, questionnaires and other methods, the student groups finished their team-work reports on the following topics associated with the operation of shrimp-fishing ponds in Waishuanghsi region: 1. environment of the community around these shrimp-fishing ponds, 2. the shrimps and fishes in these ponds and in the Waishuanghsi River, 3. environment and operation of each of the shrimp-fishing ponds, 4. cognition of the customers and college students about these fishing ponds, 5. shrimp-fishing ponds in other regions. Teaching was also accompanied with classroom/online discussions, environment and ecological knowledge contests, online learning portfolio, and a visit to Waishuanghsi region. Judging from the quality of the student reports and teaching evaluations by the students, measures adopted in this study significantly increased the self-learning motivation, knowledge of Waishuanghsi and team-work capability of the students.
