楊文會《孟子發隱》探析

A Discussion of Yang Wen-hui's "Mencius Fa Yin"

摘要


楊文會(1837-1911),字仁山,為近代佛教復興之功臣。本文以「性善之辯」、「心思之別」、「天人之際」、「文史之間」等四項主題為線索,勾勒《孟子發隱》大意,列舉註文蘊含之學術課題,旨在觀察佛、儒兩家思想交會之情形。楊文會註解《孟子》,意在達成「以佛釋儒」之目的,故佛教思想與《孟子》形成相互解釋之關係,此即西方哲學家所說「詮釋之循環性」,可為解明《孟子發隱》之鑰。透過對《孟子發隱》之研究,可以揭露文本全體與部分章句之間的循環關係,亦可發現文本與詮釋者之間的互動關係,以及古說與今詮之間的緊張關係。就佛、儒兩家思想進行意義通分之過程而言,儒家思想是理解佛家思想之所依,佛家思想則為深化儒家思想之利器,兩者互為緣起,共成理解與詮釋之任務。

Yang, Wen-hui (楊文會, 1837-1911), also known as Yang, Ren-San (楊仁山), played an important role in the revival of modern Buddhism. The purposes of this paper are to discuss the main ideas in ”Mencius Fa Yin” (《孟子發隱》) and to understand the relationships between the schools of thought of Buddhism and Confucianism. Yang, Wen-hui attempted to interpret this book of Confucian thought from the viewpoint of Buddhism. Through this work, Yang, Wen-hui showed the differences in the levels of Buddhist and Confucian thought, highlighting the ”higher” aspects of Buddhist thought. This is similar to the concept of ”hermeneutical circularity” put forth by Western philosophers. ”Hermeneutical circularity” involves the relationships of an article in its entirety and in its parts, the relationships between reader and author and the relationships between the ancient and the modern. Although there are large differences in Buddhist and Confucian thought, a better understanding of both can be gained through their interaction. Yang, Wen-hui was able to pinpoint the inadequacies in thinking found in ”Mencius Fa Yin” and gained insights into Buddhism through the reading and analysis of ”Mencius Fa Yin”.
