This study examines the degree to which athletic psychological skills differ among volleyball setters, and how these skills are affected by the players’ traits. Targeting volleyball players in the Taiwan University Volleyball League of Academic Year 2013-14, 400 questionnaires were sent to universities and teams in the League, with 304 valid responses. Analysing the data with t -tests and ANOVA, this study finds that: first, the most- and least-attained psychological skills for student athletics were both "coach ability" and "confidence". Second, normal students were better than student athletics in "coach ability" and "motivation", but worse in "confidence". Third, setters in different roles displayed significant variations in how their psychological skills had been affected by traits such as gender, year, experience and level of play field. The findings suggest that athletic performance can be raised through improvements in the professionalism of coaches, strengthening the motivation of student athletics, gaining experience from competitions and reinforcing self-confidence via fine-tuning the players’ physiological and psychological conditions.
