Distribution Identification and Path Selection for Population Agglomeration in Chinese Urbanization Development

並列摘要

The objective of this study is to use a path-driven approach in identifying the population agglomeration distribution of Chinese cities to develop urbanization. The identification of population agglomeration distribution reveals that the urban population gathers asymmetrically around average urbanization level during 2000-2004. In terms of geographical area, the regional population mainly gathers into the cities whose urbanization levels are lower than average level, while the urban population mainly gathers into the cities higher than aver-age level. In terms of population size, the regional population of cities for each size (small, medium-sized or big city) mainly gathers into the cities with urbanization level lower than the average level, while the urban population of cities for each size, especially for big city, agglomerates in the cities of higher urbanization level. The result implies that the path selection of population agglomeration is to develop big cities rather than medium-sized and small cities, and to guide population gather into urban areas of cities rather than regional areas with the purpose of promoting urbanization level.
