Analysis of Relationship Between Digital Technology and International Trade of Thailand

摘要

This study focused on analyzing the relationship between digital technology and the international trade of Thailand. The authors used the Information and Communications Technology Development Index (ICT Development Index, IDI) as the digital technology variable that included ICT access, ICT use, and ICT skills. An augmented gravity model was used and multilateral resistance was controlled, as well as the annual panel data between the years 2010-2015 were also utilized. In this study, the authors employed the Bayesian Model Averaging (BMA) to analyze the relationship. The findings showed that ICT access by importers had a positive effect on international trade while the ICT skills of importers had a negative effect. The quality of the speed of the Internet at the present time is sufficient to allow for communication between two countries that could be the reason why ICT use is insignificant. Other variables that could have a positive effect on the international trade of Thailand include the gross domestic product (GDP) of both countries, colonial relationship (colony), regional trade agreements, and borders. Alternatively, negative effects on Thailand include distance, population of the exporters, and language.
